CHANDIGARH: Going by official figures, an increase in cases of suicide has been seen in the city as 26 cases have been reported from January till September this year.
This is in comparison to 68 cases reported last year. This was revealed on the the occasion of World Suicide Prevention Day here on Friday. The figures were provided by the UT police department.
Changing lifestyle, work pressure and unsuccessful love affairs seem to have taken a toll on people. As such, numbers of those suffering from depression have also registered a marked increase.
Official sources said of all suicide cases reported till April this year, 19 were men and eight women.
Ajit Agarwal, employed with a private firm, said, "People suffering from depression should be given love and conditional support by their family and friends. A helpline should be started to offer them counselling."
Adarsh Kohli, physiologist, PGI, said, "Depression and communication gap between family members can cause suicidal tendency in some people. Also, parents should not pressurize their kids to perform well but instead encourage them."
